Mission Statement
The Nairobi Arts Trust / Center for Contemporary Art of East Africa (CCAEA) is an organization that is set to serve as an advocate for contemporary art and as a catalyst for the creation of significant art projects. We seek to nurture emerging and established artists, and to provide opportunities for inspiration, experimentation, education, and through any other art related means, which support the evolution of new ideas. We intend also to involve in a broad range of symposia, lectures, artists’ talks and studio visits that will continuously cultivate diverse audiences for contemporary art forms and provide a forum for on-going dialogue. Background Information Nairobi Arts Trust was created in 2000 with the support of the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Nairobi. Its creation was inspired by the lack of the necessary infrastructure for the development of the arts, especially in relation to international communication & exchange of ideas among artists, institutions, critics, curators and other players in the global industry as a whole. Nairobi Arts Trust was created with a view to advocate for the evolution of contemporary art and culture in the region and to enhance the development and their integration in human development strategies through the creation of relevant art projects which cultivate the evolution of new ideas, promote information and exchange of ideas, research and cooperation at the regional and international level.
Nairobi Arts Trust / CCAEA is registered in the Republic of Kenya as a Public Non-Governmental Trust organization. It is governed by a board of trustees, composed of high-level specialists of the cultural policy field representing the various genres of the Arts & Culture. The Board defines the major orientation of the programs of the Trust, approves its budgets and supervises implementation. Program activities are implemented under the leadership of the Director of the Trust and a technical team responsible for ground coordination and implementation. In October 2002, Nairobi arts Trust established an international partnership with the Centre for Contemporary Art of Africa, then based in Brussels, Belgium, and currently based in Luanda, Angola. From this partnership, Nairobi Arts Trust effectively became the East African satellite, the Centre for Contemporary Art of East Africa (CCAEA).
