Mondriaan Foundation Expert Meeting: 6th-7th February 2010.
On February the 6th and 7th 2010, the Netherlands based Mondriaan Foundation shall organise a two-day workshop in Nairobi, Kenya. The goal of this meeting is to strengthen the network with African cultural leaders and to look into the usefulness of international cultural policy for local practices. What strategies are being used by both funders and can be beneficial for both parties? Our international policy is based on increasing interest in, and demand for, contemporary visual arts, design and cultural heritage from the Netherlands.
The Mondriaan Foundation wants to stimulate visual arts, design and the cultural heritage in and from the Netherlands. In the workshop’s blog, it states that “We are committed to strengthening the international position of contemporary visual arts and design, and we accomplish this by offering financial support to organizations in over 50 countries. International cooperation and exchange are a priority. We believe it is important that professionals and the public in the Netherlands can gain insight in the latest international developments in visual arts. Therefore, we stimulate initiatives designed to bring foreign projects of topical interest to the Netherlands, activities to create and enlarge networks and international cooperation.
Applications from African cultural organisations are fewer than from organisations in other parts of the world. We would like to look into the reasons for the limited number of applications, and possibly formulate answers towards a more equal representation of African applications. Therefore, we invite key players from the African cultural field for a two-day expert meeting on this subject”.
From the Mondriaan Foundation, three people will be present at the meeting: Gitta Luiten (director), Coby Reitsma (officer international projects visual arts and design) and Maaike Lauwaert (officer projects visual arts, design and cultural heritage).
The expert meeting is coordinated by Mechtild van den Hombergh.
